Destiny 2 New Light Walkthrough — Leveling & Subclass Unlocks
New Light is Destiny 2's free intro questline — the in-game tutorial that teaches you movement, shooting and the world. Finish it and talk to Ikora Ray to unlock your Light subclasses. After that, power up through gear (soft cap → Powerful → Pinnacle), grab Stasis, Strand and Prismatic from their expansions, and start exploring patrol destinations like the Cosmodrome, EDZ and the Moon.

What New Light actually is
New Light is the free intro questline — the tutorial that drops you into Destiny 2 and teaches the core loop: move, shoot, use abilities, and find your footing in the world. It’s where every new Guardian starts. Play it first; everything else assumes you’ve done it.
Unlocking your subclasses
You don’t get every subclass at once. Each is tied to finishing specific content:
| Subclass | How to unlock |
|---|---|
| Light (Solar / Arc / Void) | Complete New Light, then speak to Ikora Ray |
| Stasis | Complete Beyond Light, then speak to the Exo Stranger |
| Strand | Complete Lightfall |
| Prismatic | Finish the first Final Shape mission in the Pale Heart |
Once your subclasses open up, the Prismatic guide and builds are your next stop for actually putting them to work.
Leveling: it’s all about gear
There’s no XP grind for Power — it only climbs through higher-level gear. The system steps up through staggered caps:
- Soft cap — reachable from almost any drop. Run Powerful-reward activities to get here fast.
- Powerful — keep banking Powerful rewards to push past the soft cap.
- Pinnacle — the top stretch; chase Pinnacle rewards for the final levels.
Heads up: Edge of Fate reset effective Power and gear, so everyone is climbing this ladder again — don’t panic if your old numbers look low.
Where you can go: destinations
Most destinations are patrollable PvE zones you can roam freely:
| Destination | Notes |
|---|---|
| Cosmodrome | Classic starter zone for New Light |
| EDZ | Earth’s European Dead Zone |
| Moon | |
| Nessus | |
| Dreaming City | Endgame secrets and the Last Wish raid |
| Europa | Stasis destination |
| Throne World | |
| Neomuna | Strand destination |
| Pale Heart | Final Shape; where Prismatic unlocks |
| Kepler (Edge of Fate) | Four regions, single-player exploration (not a patrol zone), with the Matterspark ability |

Frequently asked questions
What is New Light in Destiny 2?
New Light is the free introductory questline in Destiny 2. It's the in-game tutorial that walks new players through movement, combat and the basics of the world before opening up the rest of the game.
How do I unlock subclasses in Destiny 2?
Complete New Light and speak to Ikora Ray to unlock your Light subclasses. Stasis comes from finishing Beyond Light and talking to the Exo Stranger, Strand from Lightfall, and Prismatic at the end of the first Final Shape mission in the Pale Heart.
How does power leveling work in New Light?
Power only rises from gear, through staggered caps: soft cap, then Powerful, then Pinnacle. Run Powerful-reward activities to reach the soft cap, then chase Pinnacle rewards. Edge of Fate reset effective Power, so everyone climbs again.
How do I unlock Prismatic?
Prismatic unlocks at the end of the first Final Shape mission in the Pale Heart. It's the last subclass on the list, so you'll get Light subclasses, Stasis and Strand along the way first.
What destinations can I explore in Destiny 2?
Patrollable destinations include the Cosmodrome, EDZ, Moon, Nessus, Dreaming City, Europa, Throne World, Neomuna and the Pale Heart. Kepler, added in Edge of Fate, is a single-player exploration zone rather than a patrol space.
What is Kepler in Destiny 2?
Kepler is the Edge of Fate destination. It has four regions and is built for single-player exploration — not a standard patrol zone — and it introduces the Matterspark ability for getting around.
